Short Science Fiction Server

Our group is looking for science fiction (and fantasy) writers striving to submit to magazines such as, but not limited to, Clarkesworld, Uncanny, Apex, Asimov's, and Analog.

We are a private Discord server with no set meeting schedule. Members are free to read, submit, discuss, critique and socialize on their own terms. However, there are monthly requirements in place to maintain engagement, none of which apply to submitting one's own work--take your time with that. What members are expected to do on a monthly basis is critique any work submitted by another member within four weeks; post one story from any of the target markets which they feel exemplifies that publication's tone(s) and theme(s), give their opinions on it, and list discussion questions for others to respond to; and respond to two other discussions.

Ultimately, our goal is to better understand our audiences and use that insight when critiquing one another's works. If you're interested, shoot me a message.

The Weekly Writers' Workshop

This group is for those of us tired of reading 5 minutes of our work before receiving the kind of limited feedback that would be expected from someone who has only heard 5 minutes of our work. Those groups give a lot of people an opportunity to regularly share their writing, but do not help those who are striving to imminently improve.

I believe feedback is only really helpful if the entire piece has been read. My vision for this group is more consistent with a college fiction workshop: each week, each member is assigned another member's full short story or nonfiction work. Then, during the meeting, there is a comprehensive discussion of that work. Depending on the lengths of the works, some weeks more than one piece could be workshopped. The details are flexible, of course.

If this sounds at all interesting to you, please join! Thank you.

THE CABINET

Hello, I’m Bilal Bikile, a 26-year-old fiction and essay writer based in Southern California.

I’m starting a writers’ group specifically for MEN who are serious about their craft and eager to share their work, grow together, and achieve their publishing goals.

I’ve often found myself as one of the few men in writing workshops, surrounded predominantly by female members. This group is designed to change that dynamic, creating a dedicated space for men to connect, collaborate, and hold each other accountable.

This group aims to build a strong community where male writers can tell their stories, contribute to the literary world, and support each other both personally and professionally. We all know writing is a powerful tool for stress relief, storytelling, and understanding our lives, and I’m a firm believer that men need brotherly support systems to grow in their lives, professions, and beyond.

If you are interested in joining the group, reach out via email to BilalBikile@gmail.com or send me a DM on Instagram @bilalbikile

Aspiring Writer Hangout

Have you been getting into the hobby of writing and want someplace online to just share and discuss each other's works without a super serious critique focused vibe? Well, that's me, and I'm hoping to group up with some people in a similar boat. All ages and genres welcome, but will probably be orientated toward amateur fiction writers with passions for character, world, and plot building.

I'll be working on setting up a discord, and as people join I'll work through how the discorce will flow. I mostly expect it to function by posting work and letting others react and discuss whenever they have time.

West Side LA Workshop

Hi! My name is Elizabeth, and I'm a high school teacher in Los Angeles. I'm in my late twenties, and I write poetry for fun (but also with the goal of publication). I would love to meet weekly (or biweekly) with folks around my age (20s and 30s) to workshop poems together. Culver City or Santa Monica would be possible locations for the group. If you're interested, reach out!

50 Shades of Gray Hair

We are writing past our prime, with decades of rich material in the rear view mirror. We are retired and the kids are gone, making us free to dye our white hair whatever color we want, write our kids into novels they'll never read, use our mothers' names for a pen names when writing erotica, and we have enough time on our hands to write and re-write and re-write, hoping to have new or experienced authors along for the ride.

We are actively recruiting those among us who have found themselves on the other side of life, writing fiction (novels or short stories, mostly literary), memoirs, and creative non-fiction. All old souls are welcome. We will meet online, frequency, time, dates, TBD by the group.

Irreverent, but Mature, Writing Group

Work in this group will be presented anonymously. As the leader, I will accept submissions and make them available to the group without identifying the writer, then we can discuss the work without prejudice. We will work on assuming nothing, reading for meaning, and accepting that, while we all live on the same planet, our lives on it can be drasticly different, and for so many different reasons. The world we live in is full of anomalies and enigmas, ironies and ambiguities, in addition to the cold, hard facts we can't look away from. It's the ways we make sense of it all in a novel or story that fascinates me the most.

This group is for serious writers of fiction, literary fiction, non-genre fiction, creative nonfiction who might be a bit older than other new writers, 35+, though I'm not a fan of hard and fast rules. The irreverence I use in the title refers to the so-called rules for writing fiction, primarily. More generally,  how we write, what we write about, and how it relates to anything at all about ourselves. We can disregard the ever-tightening strictures of  life in America in 2024, without fear of reprisals or hurt feelings. Please, be strong enough to hear and provide criticism that is constructive, honest, and direct. While cruelty and personal attacks will not be allowed, let's try to practice a don't ask/don't explain policy regarding personal matters. We can let our work speak for itself and listen carefully to the voices without judgement.

We will critique the writing without considering the writer.
