Story is an independent literary journal of narrative fiction and nonfiction aimed to enrich the American literary life through a publication of a diverse and inclusive roster of contemporary voices. Founded in 1931, Story has published work that has been reprinted dozens of times in volumes of Best American Short Stories, The O. Henry Prize Stories, and The Pushcart Prize.

Tips From the Editor

We have no formal written guidelines with regard to style, content, or length (we publish flash fiction to novella length work). Reading an issue is the best way to get a sense of the type of stories we admire and seek to publish.
